"complicated question"

creekside, US

Hi everyone,
Here is my question. I just found out this evening that you can actually put photos back onto a sd card. Here's what I did. I had some photos on a cruzer or flash drive whatever you guys call it, and I opened up the cruzer, hit select all and then copied them over to my card reader (d90) and whatever that drive is, I think it's i or j, I don't know..but anyways. I then opened up the drive that my card reader is attached to and saw that indeed the photos were on there. Now here's the kicker, I then put my card back into my camera and now I can't see the pictures. Is there a reason for this? Just wondering. I took the card back out of the camera, inserted it once again into the card reader and it is still showing that they are there . Am confused...

What you've observed is completely normal. Cameras don't often like what a computer writes to the memory card. Someone else will have to give you the correct technical details, but I assume there is some kind of proprietary housekeeping or error checking info that goes missing when the computer writes to the card.

It is handy though that you can use a memory card as a flash drive. Reformat it before shooting when you put it back in the camera and you'll have no trouble. I'm sure you can start shooting without reformatting and I would guess (but haven't tested to confirm) that the camera will start a new folder for the new set of images.

When one edits or modifies an image with an image editor, there is field within the Exif data, tag:0x0131 name:Software, and if this filed is changed from what the camera expects, the camera will not display the embedded preview thumbnail Jpeg.

Oh, okay, that makes perfect sense..Why can't we all just get along!!! see that even refers to cameras and software...not just people...lol Thanks though, that does make sense...And for a fyi..did you all know that you can use the new game console Wii and show your photos through that onto the tv? I ran across that by mistake while playing a video game. If no one knows what a Wii is, it's a little white box that you can by different games to play on, well, there is a photo part on there and I was taking a break and clicked on it and it said to insert an sd card directly into the white box and then it gave the options of a slide show. You can also select music to go with your photos..I thought it was the coolest thing since a slice of bread...That is why I was wondering through my computer to see if I indeed could put photos back onto a sd card because the wii wouldn't take a cruzer...cool huh?

I love viewing my images on a HD tv. Images that look ok on my computer look FANTASTIC on the HD tv. I either plug in my D90 directly to the HD via hdmi cable or insert my card into my bluray player.

Actually this is what I'm trying to accomplish. I want to make a slide show for my mom, music included. I have racked my brains out trying to figure out a way to do it, from movie maker to a bunch of other places online that tells you how simple it is,,,yeah right. When I saw that I could just insert a sd card into the wii box, select my music available on there, I was ecstatic...thinking this is way toooo cool. But then I remembered that I had already copied the photos from my sd card of her recent pics and put them on a cruzer and threw it in the drawer. So I got the cruzer back out, put them back on the sd card and I'm all set. Now what I need to figure out to do is get these old photos onto the memory card..Yeah, good luck right? I have old pictures of her as a young girl. Any thoughts anyone, anyone, anyone??? (Ferris Buellers day off, remember?0

Darlene,

I have old pictures of her as a young girl.

If you mean physical photographs, then they need to be scanned.
If you don't have a scanner, or don't know how to do it then this is probably not the right forum.
(Hint: Any inexpensive USB flatbed scanner would do the trick.)

Good luck!

My Panasonic TV has an SD card reader slot on the side & I
agree that photos look great on a HD TV. Around 4 times
bigger than my computer screen.

Depending on the size of the pictures and what type of lens you have, you might be able to take pictures of the pictures with your camera. I have had success with this to copy family portraits, etc. that relatives have without needing to take them off the wall. Just be careful of glare, reflections, etc., and to get the perspective right by being right in front of the picture. Sometimes I need to crop them, sometimes not. I use Photoshop, but you could probably use Paint if you don't have anything else.

Darlene,

The reason you can't see these pictures on your camera may be as simple as they are not where the camera expects them to be.

I don't have my D90 to hand so can't check the exact menu you need but somewhere in there you will find an item where you can select which directory on your memory card the camera looks for. I think you can select either an individual folder or all folders but you may still not see them if the pictures are in the root directory of the card.

Hope that helps

Steve,

Yes, the specification for this is Design Rule for Camera file system(DCF)

However, even when files are in the right place and named correctly often the firmware is written only to display very specificly formatted files.

I checked my individual folders and to no avail, so I guess my camera just isn't going to read them, which at this point is no big deal. As long as the wii can show them, I'm happy. And I'm going to do just that, take pictures with my camera of these loose photos I have lying around. So I think, in the end , I will be happy with tackling and conquering just another task. Thanks guys...

I have jumped in here a little late but I may have some info for you.
the camera makes it's own folder and places the images in it. I use the same cards in my D70 and my small Canon. Neither camera see the other cameras pictures or file. they are blind to only their own. I have not formatted one of these cards to see if it wipes both files. I will have to test that. Think of the SD card just like your USB thumb drive. they are for all intent and purpose the same. you can easily put computer files on your SD card to move them to another device. You just need an I/O device. I had edited some pictures for a show that were to play in one of those large slide view Photo frames. I had to off load all of the fhotos and then load back just what I wanted to present even though they were in multiple folders on the SD card. The playing device was dumb. You can do the same thing and just load the pics you want to show on a clean card. My cousin has a scanner and he wanted to send me very old family pictures. He scanned them and sent them as a scanned image. He then photographed them with his D40 and sent them. Much improved because in shooting them they were enlarged with no grain and distortion. Try it both ways. I think you will see the difference especially if you enlarge, crop and tidy them up. I hope this helps. JB
