The agapanthus plant in our backyard was beginning to bloom. This is the first flower, and it just wanted to be noticed. Behind it and out of focus are several others ready to bloom, so by tomorrow, this bloom will not be the only show in town. I used the 18-200 VR almost like a macro, moving in and out to get as close as possible. I used the D80/SB-600 with the diffusion dome.

A honey bee visits and collects pollen from a freshly bloomed Shell Ginger flower in my neighbor's yard in Southeast Louisiana. Awesome sight! The Shell Ginger flowers grow in clusters, like grapes. The bees love the pollen. The flowers don't last long, so the bees have to work quick. They swarm, but they have absolutely no attention to anything but the pollen. I was able to get close and handhold the SB-800 with a diffusion dome and let the camera's on-board flash trigger the remote SB-800 (CLS) and still shoot the D80 hand-held. I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed taking it and then viewing the fruits of my labors. I am proud of this image.

Colleagues,

I am in Canada and spring is at least 2 months away (we have winter weather 8 months of the year). Any plants with brains are staying well below ground. Today it is -20C. That's -10F to our American friends. Try stepping out the front door in your night-robe to pick up the paper in those conditions for a "special" experience.

I might stick some plastic flowers in the snow and photograph them if the D300 will not freeze-up first. Just kidding

In the meantime you can enjoy my most recent posting of "Ice Maze" in "Recent Images". I rather like it. You make-do with what you find. More to come.

I will participate in the next contest if the snow has melted by then.

http://www.wolfwillow.com/Photo/WPhoto

Best wishes,
JH

Yes, a bit early for Spring for most Canadians. Just went on a hike last weekend in southern Alberta and the only thing I saw was snow and ice. Got some great shots of ice laden waterfalls, but, not much in the way of Spring blooms. Of course, maybe this calls for a trip to warmer regions

Cheers,

This is my first contribution ever! It was taken in the Anza Borrego Desert just east of San Diego, California shortly after the winter rains. I don't remember the EXIF data (I have the original on my computer at home), but I do remember that it was taken at ~18mm, f/3.5, ISO 100, with a polarizer. Don't recall the shutter speed, but it must've been pretty high because it was very bright out.

Mr. Jon_B

Regarding your picture "Reaching For The Sun"

I really like this picture. Very nice composition - your use of and/or "intentional and blatant abuse (GRIN)" of depth of field to accentuate a single point is superb. MOST EXCELLENT!

This should be a card I buy to make sure my fiance knows that she is the apple of my eye and the only one for me - she is the the one that stands out in the crowd - add some "flowery" language, and it's on like Donkey Kong.

Very nice picture, my friend!

Just curious, did you also try an F8 or F11 setting? Looks like you had plenty of light with the 1/1250 speed. I have this lens and find that it gives me just a little extra at F8. Nice picture though.

I can't believe the luck...
I was just browsing this great area and enjoying the photo blooms (what a talented" lot" you are) and at the same time the Sunday Morning CBS news show ran a piece on Jonathan Singer. I'm pretty sure he's not a Nikon user (looked like a Hasselblad rig) but he was teaching how to light like the Dutch Masters. His work on flowers that are facing extinction has been added to the Smithsonian next the JJ Audubon. Check this guy's work out. It's fabulous.
With any luck at all they'll have a video link to their interview with Singer.

Photo of what we call here in Alabama a "sweetgum" bloom that has just popped open in the past couple of days. The leaves are about the size of your little fingernail and the "balls" are roughly the size of peas. When adult, they balls will be about the size of golfballs and will have stickers all over them.

This was shot with:

This dove had just hatched, the parents had left the nest for a moment and I was able to take this. I used Thom Hogan's close-up recommendations for the settings. Because the nest was above my head I left it on AF and aimed for the nest.

Here's a fun shot I took last night...

Nikon D90, 18-70 AFS f/3.5-4.5. ISO 100, f/3.5 @ 18mm, 25 second exposure, LENR off, shot in RAW, converted to JPG via Lightroom 2.
