"What does this histrogram mean anyway?"

Can anyone please explain to me in laymens terms what the heck the histrogram means. I have been told that the hills and peaks need to be in the middle of the viewfinder...I take pics sometimes and get a flat line? So would you kind nikonans please direct me to where i can find more info on reading and understanding what the histrogram means.
