I have been considering the move to a DSLR and with the D70, have been thinking even more about it. I have just purchased the 80-200/2.8 AF-S VR, and based on what I read, when used with the D70/D100, I can expect the following due to the 1.5X cropping factor;
- the effective focal length will appear as a 105-300mm lens.
- this would effectively give me a 300mm/2.8 AF-S VR at the high end.
Using this same lens with my film camera, I can achieve the same image by cropping after the fact, to the same 1.5X factor.
Are my assumptions accurate? Thanks for the help.

in a word: Yes.
the only thing you might want to consider are the differences between the image characteristics of film and that of digital capture. you'll find that while they both look good, they'll look a little different.
