I currently have a D70 on order.
I am going on holiday to South Africa and plan to visit one of their game parks. As I'm new to Nikon I don't have any existing lenses so am after some advice on what lense to purchase to a maximum of £250.
Should I get the Nikon 70-300mm G or D, or go for another manufacturer like Sigma or Tamron?
I would be very grateful for any advice/tips from existing users.

Ideally you should buy the 80-400 VR for this trip. But that is about $1000 over your price range.
I have heard that 600mm is a must for Safari. I'm not sure, check out Ken Rockwell or Luminous Landscapes for more info, as they both have lens info.
A 70-300 (buy a used ED version if you can find it). Would give you almost enough.
You could probably find a used 80-400 Tokina somewhere, although I don't think this is particularly a sharp lens.
You might look into renting a 80-400 VR, as this will really do the job for you. If not, really try to find something that goes to 400mm, thus giving you 600mm on a DSLR.
