"D70 Body only w/ "General Purpose Lens'"

Frisco, US

Hello Everyone,

I am new to digital photography and am in the process of purchasing a D70 (as opposed to Canon 300D). Money is tight and wanted to know if buying the body only with a Nikon 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IF ED lens would be an advisable option. I want Zoom for taking sports shots of my son. I am afraid that this lens is not a "DX" style and that I will lose picture quality when making large prints. Can anyone advise as to whether or not this is a good option. If not what 2 lenses would anyone recommend for a novice taking sports shots of their kid?

Thanks in advance.

Hi bigblock,

There are a couple of choices:

1) Single lens: Nikkor 28-200 G or Tamron 28-300 XR
2) Two lenses: Nikkor 18-70 DX + 70-300 G

These setups are not ideally suited for sports but they offer very low entry costs and will get you started. I suggest you also post this message in the "Nikkor" forum.

One last thing, the DX type lenses are ones that can only be used on digital. It has nothing to do with quality. In comparison, non DX lenses can be used on both film and digital (which IMHO is an advantage, but again nothing to do with quality).

Thanks for the info Roy, I thought the size of the image sensor being smaller than full frame would impact the quality of image when used with a Lense that projects an image larger than the sensor, ie such as vignetting or CA problems.

I will post on the Nikkor as well.

My understanding of your concern is that lenses not designed with digital photography in mind might not work as well with DSLRs. This might be true, but it all depends on the specific sensor & lens pairing. One rather extreme example is the decades old 50-300 ais lens which as I understand works really well on the D1X!

My thinking is that DX lenses might be a good choice, but you should definitely consider non DX lenses. Some may work amazingly well, better than the DXs. Also, all the current "pro" glass are in non DX format.
