"New Nikon D70 D-SLR announced"

Nikon has today officially announced that there will be a new Nikon Digital SLR called the D70 with a companion zoom lens available by spring 2004. http://www.nikon-image.com/eng/news_release/2003/d70.htm

From the image, the camera has a simlar design style as the D2H. The CAN price is supposed to be under $1400 CAN. The US is saying $999 US body only.

Spring 2004? We'll see. Nikon has already announced it will be late shipping the 17-55 DX Nikkor announced way back when...

I really dislike this kind of press release. All fluff and no real info. Contrast this with Canon's announcement of the 300D with the camera shipping in quantity within a week following. Nikon needs to close the gap between announcement and product in the shops, not to expand the credibility gap.

Yes, while it's nice to see it finally announced (after having been "rumored" for so long now), the timing of this seems to have more to do with Christmas than with the actual launch of a product. Oh well, at least when Nikon does ship, they seem to get things right the first time around

BJ:

Couldn't agree more; as far as I know the 17-55 is still not available, but I'm not interested in that lens, so I have not followed it that close.
However, I *am* very interested in the 10,5 DX, which was supposed to be shipping in october. We're in December, and still NOTHING.

What a drag!

And all too often a long-awaited lens will finally show up in the shops but be in such short supply that you can't buy one for months. The N70 should be planned for big production numbers, but "spring" typically means "June" based on previous Nikon product releases.

This announcement is basically targeted at Nikon owners and would-be buyers saying, "Don't buy a Canon for Christmas". Such a PR move can backfire by underlining the fact that Nikon has nothing to offer for months. There isn't even a hint of a superior spec or feature to give buyers an extra incentive to wait. I've long wondered where Nikon would be if it was any good at marketing.

It was nice of Nikon to announce it. Some specifications would have been better.

I agree with BJ in that Nikon is trying to "pre-empt" some people from buying the 300D for Christmas by announcing this early. Canon did have their 300D in the store within a couple of weeks of their announcement. And with Nikon's track record of delivering new products on time (i.e. when they said they would) isn't that great lately.

Let's just hope they can deliver this one as promised. But then again, they haven't promised much - how can you announce a new DSLR and give so few specs?

Oddly enough, there are quite a few foreign sites with a lot of specs. Since I don't read Japanese or Chinese, I don't have a lot of information, but the sensor appears to be 6mpx, not surprisingly...

Remember when anyone who posted a N65 question was told they really needed to get a N80 to do "serious" photography? Are you D100 owners going to do the same thing to D70 owners?

So what do you all think it'll be lacking when stacked against the D100? I know it's impossible to really tell, but if it's got the same CCD as the D100, and the standard exposure modes, why not just drop the price of the D100 to $999 and bring a D150 or D200 to the market? Think it'll just be lacking in the frames-per-second spec or buffer? The AF module? More plastic and less metal??? I'm just curious as to what people think...

I think that we will see the replacement of the D100 around the same time for his newer version. That would be the inteligent thing to do since the D70 seems almost the same thing as the D100.
