"Help with a purchase from NY"

AU

I have bought an expensive lens from http://www.cambridgeworld.com/ via eBay (eBay ID - cambridgephoto). I have not yet paid for it. Because I have been scammed recently & hearing the stories in this forum, I am very apprehensive. Could you please help in looking in to options to proceed with the transaction. The options are:-

1) PayPal & eBay with payment through Credit card. Tis is my usual option. As the item is significantly more than USD 3000.00 I am not sure what happens if it is not sent as PayPal only covers for USD 3000.00.

2) Escrow service. I have no experience with them.

3) Buying in person. Best option but I live outside USA so not practical.

The suggestions & experience, highly appreciated.

They don't have many ratings, but the ones they do have are mostly negative. Lifetime rating of 0.28 on a 10 point scale.

I'd say if you are apprehensive, trust your instincts and buy elsewhere.

They also have 285 negative, neutral, and mutually withdrawn feedbacks on eBay, which would keep me from buying from them, even though they do have over 5,000 positives.

If you have been scammed and you've been reading the "sky-is-falling-frenzy" here, why did you buy online without doing your research first? You entered into a binding agreement...ask them out of it if you want, but you should have looked into this before hand. Maybe they'll give you a break.

jbear & Rocky have some sage advice. Hopefully you can walk away unscathed and more adequately informed.

When dealing with ANYONE on eBay, one should always, repeat - ALWAYS look at their feedback ratings and comments BEFORE placing a bid or buy. That is the FIRST thing you should do. Especially when you're dealing with such an expensive and valuable item.

Good luck!

They're been around a long time and have never been a reputable dealer. I didn't even know they were a Nikon dealer, except maybe importing from shady outfit somewhere and reselling with their own warranty. I think you're better off just backing out of the deal, at least you'll still have the money to spend on something worthwhile. It may cause you problems on eBay, especially if you don't have much history there. If you're bought and sold a fair amount, like 100 transactions, it won't have much effect on your feedback score.

Why are you even considering going through with the transaction? Just walk, no run, away! A person going to visit them will not help - they can show a good product, yet still not ship to you or ship you a different product. If he buys, he would have to pay sales tax and run the risk of being fleeced by you?

Just forget it!

I believe the new rules on eBay do not allow negative feedback from the seller?

As far as them not shipping the lens, your credit card should cover you. If they don't send anything to you, most major cards will cover any purchase over $50 by rescending the payment to the company. Condition of the lens is more of a subjective matter, but at least this way, if you don't get a shipment, there are no problems getting the funds back . . .

Not following through with an agreement is wrong if they do it...and wrong if you do it. That's how we end up with problems...do the research first and if you don't feel comfortable...don't do it! That's hindsight in this instance, and you have to do what you have to do. Its interesting to me that its "OK" for one of us to back out of a deal agreed upon, but when "they" do it...we have a uproar about the scammers and disreputable dealers out there. That's hypocritical in my opinion.

Guys...

Don't be too rough on poor Cham. He is a great guy and knows the Ebay ropes very well.

He bought a RARE lens on Ebay. Really RARE!!

If it was normal purchase he would never have done it. The problem is the place he bought from just sucks.

I am going to try to help him out if I can... I live close by in Long Island.

jbear, I have a huge amount of respect for you, but I have to respectfully disagree. In the bad situations that have happened here recently the buyers had already sent the payments and received nothing in return. In this case no product has been shipped and no payment has been sent. No one has been damaged. I would rather NOT pay and take my negative Feedback, than pay a lot of money and receive who knows what in return.

You can also check out their report on the Better Business Bureau:

http://search.newyork.bbb.org/reports.aspx?id=1690&pid=44&page=0&FindStr=cambridge+camera&SearchBy=company&Address=&City=&Phone1=&Phone2=&Phone3=&MembersOnly=False

They're not a BBB accredited business, but the number of complaints is not as bad as other companies I've seen - particularly the Brooklyn based guys that have about 20 different names listed for the same company.

jbear,

I agree with what you said in principle. However the priciples are there to be challenged depending on the specific situation!!!

My situation is that I found a very very rare & expensive item through eBay. I did not want to miss the opportunity so I did BIN. As this was an expensive item & as I have been scammed recently before paying the item I did a search and found all these information which naturally made me hesitant. In general I would have paid for it within few hours. The Nikonians that I have dealt with in the past would know that. I want to complete the transaction provided that is safe. This is my true intention. However if there is a high risk I will bail out. If I decided to do that it is for a reason beyond my control!!!! This is a situation that sellers will come across & I consider that is part of a "good" seller's service. Certainly I can recall atleast 3 buyers (eBay) bailing out of a lens or a camera that I have sold. Despite the wasting of time, I even never left a negative feedback for them!!!

Donzo98 has kindly accepted to help me out. Will keep you up to date.

Send Donzo the money and let him pick it up in person and pay cash if it checks out...Then Donzo can ship to you and you don't have to worry about a switch and everyone wins... since Donzo is happy to help you. Good Luck

Hi Cham,
First understand that I hope this does work out for you, and it looks like you are lucky enough to have another Nikonian come through to help you out. That is a great thing about this site.
I do take your point, but I suppose I would take you back to the above quote and suggest that NOBODY should give in to that type of impulse becuase it can lead to problems. I understand completely...I've made those mistakes too, but it was a mistake. You "didn't want to miss an opportunity," so you made an impulse buy without doing your homework, and it could have turned out badly.
We all go through this at one point or another. I'm not trying to be preachy (I hope it doesn't sound that way); I'm just trying to help you (and others) keep from making a similar mistake in the future.
I'll look forward to hearing that it turned out well for you.

I completely agree with you, it was impulsive and I should have done the homework before clicking the BIN. This should NOT be the way of eBaying. Certainly I will inform you the progress.

What is the lens in question here? I realize it is rare and expensive but there is little chance one of us will swoop in and buy it (plus it's claimed already).

Just curious

Well seeing how the OP states it is over $3k, and cambridgephoto's completed auctions only show one lens over that price, I'm assuming it was the Nikon 6mm F2.8 AiS Fisheye.

At close to $12,000 no wonder Cham is taking every precaution. I would definitely recommend seriously looking into the Escrow.com provided through eBay (regardless of who the seller is unless it was someone like B&H or KEH).

Wow, I didn't even know there was a 6mm fisheye! Cool. We all have our wants. I'd personally love a 600mm f/4 VR at the same price but a 6mm lens sounds like something that would be a joy to compose.

Good luck with your purchase!

While just walking away (which the OP didn't suggest) might not be too cool, I think for a $12,000 purchase he is entitled to use a reputable escrow service of his choosing and at his cost. If the seller won't consent, I would say he could ethically walk away because of reasonable doubts about the security of the transaction.

Cambridge Camera has been in business over 12 years mainly mail order and internet sales with ad listed in Popular Photograpy and a few others. They are in Brooklyn and does their grey market import like
their countryman 47th Street Photo in Manhattan.
I don't see any problem buying from them using your credit card except that your CC Bank may not approved such a large one time lumsum
purchase. Have you call the BBB in NY to check and ever consider
picking up the lens yourself ? since you are spending big bucks so act like a big spender and go to NY, NY to pick it up.
Call your bank to ask for their advise and for their pre-approval
because in this day and age of bad credit, foreclosures, the banks
are very reluctant to allow the use of large amount of credit without
previous pattern of similiar spending and or pre-approval.
I would because I flown to NY to pick up my 10K Zenith watch.
You can forget using escrow because Cambridge Camera will never go
for it. Remember there is no such thing as best of both world in your
favor.
Either go for it or like they say in Brooklyn, " Forget abou it "
This thread shouldn't even be at this forum.

I think you would be safe if paying with credit card, problem you will run into is backordered merchandise, they will lie to you and say its in stock then take months to deliver, I think your safe but might be better off dealing in person, not a company I would deal with, try B&H or Adarama

Bobby, while that sounds like a good idea, Cham lives in Australia. Rather an expensive trip even for a lens at that price. Based on a couple of private emails I have exchanged with Cham I am not 100% convinced that they actually have that lens in stock. Since the emails were private I will leave it up to Cham if he wants to share the reason for my suspicions.

Well now it explains why all this worries. Cham lives in down under and Nikon lenses and any other imports are very expensive because of the import duty and the VAT. Mail order is a good way to save more than a few bucks.
Our other member has already pointed out that these grey market dealer doesn't carry stock especially a lens at this price. It is almost for sure they will tell you the lens is in back order and you
will be waited for months before seeing it or a refund. A lens this rare has limited quota for each country and dealers because Nikon
knows it will be highly sought. That is why a lot of people goes to
Hong Kong and Singapore looking for their dream lens. Just look at the auction at eBay and you will find a lot of sellers are from Hong Kong.
My suggestion is forget about it or check with a legit dealer how long it takes to order such a lens ? This is like buying a Rolex
Daytona, the MSRP of Rolex is around $ 7,500.00 but you will have to
pay over $10,500.00 for it because the production is limited and a legit dealer cannot sell to you above the MSRP price and put your name on their waiting list. Guess who can you go to buy one ?? Local
mail order is dangerous enough but international internet mail order ?
Forget about it...
Hope my nickle didn't offend anyone by implications.
They call it Big Apple because anyone can take a bit at it.

I have never heard anything positive about this store. I too have been ripped of in the past and my advice to you is "RUN RUN RUN" The worst that can happen is to get a negative feed back. SO WHAT! You will still have your money!!!!!

I have a different take on this one. If you won it through eBay, I would take a look at their eBay scores. In this case, it is:

Positives: 5067
Negatives: 89
Feedback: 98.3% Positive

That is a lot of sales with good feedback.

They may be awful to deal with outside of eBay, but by all appearances, they hold up in this particular venue.

Hello sergeantcigar,

This is exactly what was going in my mind. However if you have a closer look at the feedback there is not a single item over USD >1000!!! Most of the items are less tha 10.00. I know I should have considered these factors before BIN.

Many thanks for all the help and comments. Special thanks to Donzo98 & Nikon32250. I would have got in to big trouble without the help of this forum. I am not proceeding with the sale for the following reasons specific to this transaction (this is despite the overall terrible feedback they have):-

1) I requested some photos of this lens from Cambridgeworld, Moty told me he took some photos last friday and emailed them to me. Luckily I emailed those photos to Nikon32250 who analysed the EXIF data through IfranView and found these photos were created in 2006. So the photos should be fake. No new photos were sent to me when I pointed this out to him!!!! I cannot be 100% sure even the lens does exist!!!!

2) As I have following these particular lenses for the last few years, I have seen most of the discussions in different forums about this lens. I had a de ja vu feeling about the photo from Cambridgeworld's eBay advertisement and finally found out yesterday that the photo listed was stolen from one of those forums!!!!!

3) Moty has categorically refused to provide the full serial number of the lens untill it is fully paid. He did not provide me the last 2 digits. I can understand not listing the serial number in the eBay ad, but atleast they should provide the serial number to the winning bidder if it is a legitimate lens.

4) When I mentioned about the Escrow service, there was no mention about it at all in the email replies. If the lens is in the condition described why would you be reluctant on an Escrow service, especially when it is paid by the buyer???? OK, I agree this is a soft point. May be reluctant as it is a highly collectible lens & high value item in case the buyer returns it for a very soft reason.

Best Regards

Wow, that's crazy, at first I thought it might be unethical to back out of a deal but seems like you had full intention of paying but just wanted some re-assurance. That's fair. Now the seller will have to put in a dispute to Ebay or save face since they did not have the item anyway. Best part, they get charged a 3% (?) final cost fee for the sale of the item. This is different than the listing fee or Paypal fee. They'll lose some money for being devious.

Hi Cham,
Based upon items 1-3 on your list, my opinion is that you are ethically and morally within your rights to withdraw your winning bid and to consider your committment null and void. The seller is not acting in good faith and has demonstrated evasive behavior. I think you are making a wise decision.
Glad it worked out for you.

If you're willing to give up 2mm there is a Nikon 8mm f/2.8 fisheye on Ebay from Ian Hobday (Japan), I've done lots of transactions from him and he's a great guy.
