In my opinion this is quite a useful new feature in CNX2 2.3.4. Now there is an improved noise reduction algorithm included in the Camera Settings section.

Now we have improved granularity of the sharpness slider control on a scale from 1-100. Higher numbers affect smaller sized noise grains and lower numbers affect larger grains. For the Intensity slider it still retains a scale of 1-100 but for the previous Faster or Better settings even modest numbers eliminated detail quite rapidly. Even though the scale range for the new Better 2012 style is still the same it seems to have much finer control. I could never use intensities over 15 with the previous styles.

The new algorithm seems to retain more detail and removes more noise than any possible settings for the Faster/Better styles.

This is only available in the Camera Settings applied globally to the image and the edit step styles of noise reduction are unchanged from previous versions. I hope this changes in a future release.

I found this new enhancement encouraging as it seems there is still a light on in the software development department at Nikon. Perhaps the Nik/Google acquisition does not spell the end of CNX after all.

Here are some 100% crops showing a comparison of the different noise reduction styles.

Final output holds up to some sharpening without showing noise problems after the Better 2012 noise reduction applied.
