"SD card problem .nef files can't be read "

UK

Help! I took several photos at a wedding on Saturday (using a nikon d7000 shooting in raw) and the first 5 or so are fine. However the remaining files on the memory card (I took about another 30 photos in a formal arrangment before realising the problem) can't be read. They don't work in the viewer on the camera, and I can't open them using viewnx 2 (it just says "unsupported file type"). However each individual file is present, each is about the right size (varying sizes between 19 and 21 mb).

So the data must be there, I just can't read it.

Presumably this is a problem with the SD card corrupting.

Can anyone advise how I might be able to read the data? I have looked for some recovery software but it all seems to be focussed towards finding "lost" data on a corrupted SD card rather than repairing files or making them readable.

Thanks!

Alex

Although the files appear intact, they may not have been completely "written-out" and thus are truncated from the camera and the computer's viewpoint. I am not aware of any utilities that can help this particular scenario unfortunately.

I would not assume the card just yet. But it is a likely suspect. More testing, especially at high rates of read-write - say continuous FPS - are warranted to confirm the card as a problem. Get another two cards, preferably same size and speed, to make sure. the last thing you need is to have a continually nagging suspicion that it's the camera...

Thanks for your reply. Yikes I really hope that there is something I can do. Surely if there is 20mb of data there for each image, even if it hasn't been quite "sealed off", I should be able to access the data that is there...? Haven't had any other problems with other SD cards of the same size and speed. Do you know of any specialist companies or the type of company even to go to that might be able to sort out this kind of problem?

Thanks again

Alex

Alex,
Are you using a card reader or the camera connected to your PC? Try using a card reader of you have one.

Good luck...JL

Hi, sadly I've tried both . I'm sure there must be some way of getting the images back - I'll try Nikon and see if they might be able to advise....

Thanks

Alex

Google is your friend. I typed in "repair nikon raw file" and found the following near the top of the results:

http://geekswithblogs.net/felipe/archive/2010/07/12/140879.aspx

No guarantees. I never tried it, not even sure what the script will do given the article was written over 2 years ago, but what have you got to lose?

Thanks for the suggestion - good find! I tried the script but unfortunately it doesn't work. It does make each image appear as a gray/whitish thumbnail (the colour of the wall that you take a photo of) but doesn't get the pictures back. Sigh. Thanks for all the suggestions though, I'll keep looking. Currently speaking to Nikon to see if they can do anything.

As a future mitigating control - consider shooting RAW+JPEG and if your camera allows it, write to dual cards.
