"Sony's .ARW and CNX2"

McLean, US

I think I know the answer (no), but I'll ask anyway.

I've invested a good bit of time learning Capture NX2 and am reasonably satisfied with the results working on .NEF files from my Nikon bodies.

I just bought a Sony DSC-RX100 because of its size and advanced sensor to use when I don't want to carry the larger cameras. I'd love to be able to process Sony's .ARW RAW files in CNX2. Naturally, .ARW is a proprietary format, which won't open in NX. My work-around so far is to process the .ARW files in Image Data Converter v.4, free software from Sony, convert to JPG, then do final tweaking in Capture.

Results are fine, but I'd like to find a way to convert the .ARW files to a RAW format that Capture can deal with and process them there. Not a big deal, but I'd rather not have to use two different programs.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

At a RAW image level the only converter I am aware of that will convert other RAW formats to something close to another camera's RAW format is Adobe's DNG converter, but it does not convert the Maker Note information to another manufacturer's tags and data. DNG is the RAW format for some cameras.

What alternatives do you have? I'd probably convert from .ARW to a 16 bit TIFF. Then open the TIFF in Capture NX2 and Save As an .NEF. All subsequent edits will be lossless and reversible.

A TIFF will have more image data to bring into Capture than a JPEG. Capture NX2 will handle JPEG's or TIFF's just fine, but converting them to a .NEF format makes post processing a bit better since everything is lossless.

Thanks for the advice. I'll experiment with converting to TIFF, then to NEF.
