"CNX2 producing strange artifact"

US

Every once in a while, while editing .NEFs in Capture NX2, I end up with a strange artifact in the image.

It doesn't show up until after I save the image. I can reload the image and delete any one step, and the gray box goes away. I can then re-do the deleted step and save the image without the gray box.

But it's a pain in the butt to deal with since they don't show up until I save the image and start editing in another program. I need to go -back- to CNX2 to correct it.

Anyone have a clue?

I am going to guess that this is a video card problem as it appears like an area of the display that did not clear properly. Try looking for a driver update for your card. I have never seen anything like this in CNX2.

Box for embedding title or copyright info, metadata entry? I wouldn't know for sure as I'm trying to find out how to embed copyright info on an image.

No, CNX doesn't use such a dialog boxes for metadata.

I have see something similar to this occasionally when using the High Pass Filter. Generally, if it happens, you need to save the image w/o a High Pass edit step. Close CNX and then restart and reload the iamge.

I experience this phenomenon occasionally, and it is definitely related to the use of the high-pass filter. When it happens, I simply re-open the nef file in CNX2, delete the high-pass edit step, re-apply the high-pass edit step and then re-save the file. Works every time. I've not found it necessary to save the file without the high-pass edit step or close and re-start the application.

I've run into the same issue. I am seeing the artifact in Capture and it is carried into View. I have to reprocess the image creating a new embedded JPEG to make it go away.

Well, I finally heard back from Nikon.

They had never seen or heard of the problem, so their suggestion is to uninstall and reinstall CNX2.

I guess I'll see how that works.

Thanks for bringing us that reply from Nikon four eighty sparks.

It's extremely disappointing that they claim never to have seen this!!

I've had these blobs appear many times during my CNX2 editing, and it's clear that others here on Nikonians have also seen them ... so my optimistic assumption that "Nikon will soon fix this common flaw ..." has been stupidly naive. GGGrrrrr!!!!

> (....) so their suggestion is to uninstall and reinstall CNX2.

That response from Nikon IMHO is a technically limp, weak and (for most of us) futile non-answer!!! How really sad.

I love my Nikon and I love what I can do with my photos in CNX2 - and yes I'll admit I'm reacting a bit OTT to Nikon's reply to you (I'm having an iffy day today!!!) - but how much better it would have been if Nikon had replied with a simple acknowledgement and a "thank you, we will investigate this thoroughly and we'll aim to cure it soon ..."???

I had the same problem occur today and have also opened a ticket with Nikon Technical Support. A screenshot of the problem is attached here. The artifact was created in Capture NX2. It was small and unexpected so the artifact remained when I copied the NEF into another folder using the Save As command. The artifact remained when I did another Save As and created a JPEG.

I was able to go back to the original file, open it, and make a small adjustment and then Save it - and the artifact disappeared.

My case number is 120712-000808 just in case somebody at Nikon says they have never heard of this before.
