"Trouble converting NEF to JPG - color shift"

South Lyon, US

I have a bunch of NEF files I recently shot, in Adobe RGB. I completed all my edits (using Capture NX2) and am trying to convert to sRGB and jpg format. I set up a batch process to make the color space conversion, no problem. But when I save the files as jpg and then look at them using Mac's Preview, the color shifts more red. I found if I check the Imbed ICC Profile check box in Save Option Dialog, the colors look ok in Preview. Also if I open the file saved without the Imbed ICC Profile check box checked in Capture NX2, the color also shifts red and the indication at the bottom left of the image is Nikon Adobe RGB 4.0.0.0.3001.
Should I be checking the Imbed ICC Profile check box when making the NEF to jpg conversion?
I'll be saving the jpg's to disc and giving to friends so they can view and print as desired, but I want to be sure the colors are correct.

Thanks for your help.
Chuck

Are you changing the profile during edit or as a batch process?

If during edits, you would need to check 'convert profile' rather than 'apply profile'. 'Apply' does not make the change permanent.

If you're doing it in batch, imbedding the ICC profile should do it.

If tink I'm going to be saving a JPG version, I usually use a small setting file to convert to sRGB and sharpen in one step. I then save a version with this profile leaving me with both my master and the converted version to save as a JPG.

All that being said, I'm a Photo Mechanic user and that software has a terrific 'save as' faciltiy. You can select multiple NEF images and save them as JPG, renaming if desired, watermarking, converting to sRGB, sharpening, etc. It's very quick and very flexible. I find the NX2 batch process to be too time consuming. The watermarking in Photo Mechanic is particularly useful if you're going to post your work anywhere.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response Ralph.

I'm changing as a batch process.
It sound like imbedding the ICC profile is the answer to my problem.

I'll give it a try.

Thanks for the help!
