"image profile in view nx"

Hi all,

After a sometimes confusing journey I have decided to change the default profile for images in view NX preferences to adobe RGB (I have camera set to sRGB but shoot in NEF). I have checked the use instead of embedded profile box.

I chose Nikon Adobe RGB 4.0.0.3001. Is this going to be any different to using Adobe RGB (1998).

I plan on using Capture NX2 to edit, which I used for the trial period but I can't afford to buy it just now.

Cheers,
Suzy

EDITED: I have decided to stay with s RGB until I understand how all this works a little better.

I don't think there is a significant difference between those 2 versions of Adobe RGB. I do think you should also set you camera to Adobe RGB. Is there some reason you do not do that, Suzy?

Mick,

The truth is when I first got the D90, Ken Rockwell had recommended sRGB and I just left it there.

Recently, I read in several books that I should do as you say (Bryan Peterson and Darrell Young).

The strange thing is I just got a program called ExifChanger which says my images are AdobeRGB which doesn't make sense??

I'll change to Adobe RGB and I need to change the profile in ViewNX and CNX2, correct?

BTW, I now have CNX2; yay.

Thanks for the response; I must admit, this colour management is a bit more confusing than I first thought, but I think I'm starting to get it.

Cheers,
Suzy

Suzy,

You can set CNX and VNX (I think) to leave the image color space alone, or change it when the image is opened in the program.

I prefer to set both the camera and the software to use AdobeRGB by default.

Mick,

"I prefer to set both the camera and the software to use AdobeRGB by default."

This is what I plan to do from now on. With images already marked sRGB, I presume that checking the box 'use instead of imbedded profile' will mean AdobeRGB will be used.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Suzy

Use embedded profile means that the software will use whatever profile was set in the camera when you took the shot.

In View NX2.3, the option is "Use this instead of the embedded profile when opening images". If you check that box, then View NX will replace the embedded profile with the Default Color Space that you specify in View's Color Management options.
