"Opening an image in CS4 extended from NX2"

Tyler, US

When I open an image from NX2 into CS4 extended I notice the dynamic range of the image is almost (not completely equal to) the same as the original NEF image in NX2. However, if the same image is opened in CS4 from either LR2 or CS Bridge the image is a lot more washed out and is nowhere similar to the original NEF image in NX2.
Does NX2 convert the NEF image into TIFF when it opens into CS4 or does CS4 process the NEF file to TIFF?

Is there any other way to open the image in CS4 after acquiring into NX2 with capture and maintain the complete image quality?

Thanks

NX2 converts your edited NEF to a TIFF which it saves in your designated folder.

What you see in CS4 should be exactly what you saw in NX2.

The Nikon software ViewNX and Capture NX2 apply the in camera settings to the image when a NEF is opened and Adobe products do not apply these settings upon opening. Once you open the NEF image in Nikon software, you can can the file as a TIFF or JPEG or transfer the image to another editor with the in camera settings applied to the image. That would also inclue the D-lighting.

Thanks both of you for that info. So if I maintain the workflow as NX2 followed by CS4 then it would be the best possible image I could get to CS4.
Thanks again.

If "best possible" means closest to the camera settings, then definitely yes. Many people will argue that you can get as good a starting point by using the appropriate presets in LR2 or ACR. I personally like the fact that NX2 understands and uses the camera settings.
