"NX 2.3 and JPG"

Walnut Creek, US

I installed Capture NX 2.3 on my apple computer. Now when I click on a JPG I get the following error message: "Cannot load file: Macintosh HD/Users/Dennis/Pictures/Africa Day 2/20110617_Africa days2-3_0382.JPG Invalid color format. The file format is not supported." This is what I get no matter what JPG I try to open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but to no avail. I have ask for help from Nikon and I am awaiting a second answer the first was the above action. I am hoping somebody, here had an answer.

Let's break it into separate steps to find out where the problem is.

Can you open the JPEG file using any other program on your computer? JPEG images are pretty generic - they should open on most computers with a wide range of programs. This will confirm the file is not corrupted.

Can you simply open the program Nikon Capture NX2 version 2.3? Can you verify that it is the right version?

Can you open the folder list and browser on the left side of the Capture NX2 screen?

When you open the browser, what happens? Do you see thumbnails?

Yes the pics open in other programs

I can confirm that it is version 2.3

Folder and browser on left when open.

I see thumbnails when opening browser. It is when I click on them to open in edit window that I get the error message

Same here,
Its running in 64 bit mode; if you switch it to 32bit mode in the 'get info panel' and restart the application it worked for me...
I am running Lion OS
Hope that helps

Right,

well, if you have the NX2 icon on your dock, you right click it and select 'show in finder' - then you right click that icon and select 'show info' - near the top of that display panel should be a check mark box that says 'open in 32-bit mode' - just check the box and close the panel; then start NX2...

or

click on applications folder and click 'open in finder' - proceed as above in finding NX2. app ...

or

click finder on the dock and then file/new finder window and there navigate to your NX2.app and go as above

Anyways, once you find the application you just right click on its icon and check the box for 'open in 32 bit mode' in the resulting info panel!

Hope that was confusing enough - but there is usually more than one way to 'skin a cat'...

It worked. Now the JPG opens as it should. I appreciate your help and patience in helping me solve this issue.

Can you please upload the image to your gallery ?

Maybe it works in 32bit, but that can´t be really the reason.

It should also work in 64bit.

There must be something else.

I was wondering about that too - the fact in my case is however that NX2 would not display ANY jpegs that were already on my hard drive until I went into 32 bit mode ( jpegs from Nikon, Olympus, and Canon) - they all came up with the same error message. They showed in the 'filmstrip' but would not display (open in the edit window) ...

So, I agree, there must be some other issue...

Absolutely; I wonder if it's 10.6.8 that's the issue. In general, I think
that when Apple updates the system software, you should get the upgrade.

To the folks having problems: are your machines 64-bit capable,
and is your machine running in 64-bit mode?

Happy Shooting!

I am having the same problem and I am running 10.7.2 and yes I am running in 64 bit mode. Interestingly, if I use NX2 to save a jpg from a nef, I have no problem opening the resulting jpg file in NX2. Also if I use Photo Mechanic to save a jpg file as a TIF, again no problem opening the file in NX2.
