"Correcting distortion in NX2 at 14mm FX?"

There appears to be a limit on how much correction you have with NX2,

I'm new to WA and just wondering whether other software is needed or is there a limit to how much you can correct?

Gary

Gary it is not clear what your issue is. Just what are you trying to correct that the auto correction in NX2 is not doing for you? The NX2 Sw will correct barrel and pincushion distortion. If you are tilting your camera and keystoning the image, you may need additional tools.

The 14-24 lens has very little lens distortion over its entire range. Most noticeable is the field curvature at the long end. As has been pointed out, every wide angle lens exhibits geometric distortions. I use DxO Pro to remove the field curvature and also to correct for geometric distortions. In case you are interested, they have a free trial.

Hi Bob, Tristan,

To "cut a long story short",

I was at my Daughter's house photographing the wife's latest quilts,
After completing that task,

I have always wondered how much I'm really going to loose using the in-built flash with the 14-24, just as a test I did a quick snap of their front room before leaving, unfortunately, the daughter caught me chimping and now wants photos throughout for a future sale,

I was going to trash can the image tonight but fortunately it is still in the system,

I have not done any PP other than distortion, except for a slight crop,

I guess that wide is going to increase perspective angles,

I'm not keeping this image obviously but is it possible to correct the leaning of the ceiling and make the far corner vertical,

I managed a bit in NX2 but could not improve this,

I do not have a full grasp on the terminology yet so my post may have been somewhat misleading,

Regards,
Gary

The problem with this picture is the fact that you did not keep the camera level. You might want to use the "virtual horizon". I did some quick adjustments in DxO, but the result is not perfect:

OK Gary you did not level the camera. Try the straighten tool in NX2 either on the wall intersection to make it vertical or on th ceiling to make it horizontal. Otherwise a trip to Photoshop lens correction can correct it as well.

Tks Tristan,

Appreciate your feedback,

Looks like tripod is the go!

DxO could be a good option for me!

Still learning how to use WA, I've had great success at landscape but in close, I will have to watch the level!

Amazing how much you could correct

Regards,
Gary

Thanks Bob,

Actually, since reading the tips here, I went back to NX2 and, by chance, did exactly what you posted,

This image ready for the trash can now, have learnt a lot from this post,

May eventually look at Dx0 for the times when I cannot get the camera in the ideal position,

Lost count of how many shots I have taken between 19 and 24, just seems to work out that way,

Under controlled conditions for landscape with the tripod, haven't had any problems at 14mm,

I will have to watch shooting discipline when shooting indoors at 14mm,

I guess my distortion expression was a bit misleading, I guess I created the distortion!

Out of interest, I was having a look through the "large" real estate section in our weekend paper and looking at the images,

I feel much better now!

Regards,
Gary
