"Capture NX Question"

Richmond Hill, GA (Savannah), US

I recently tried to edit some D90 nefs with Capture NX, but it wouldn't open them.

Is there an update to NX that adds D90 compatibility?

Or do you have to have NX2?

Must be a pretty old version.

Capture NX downloads, full versions for Mac (1.3.1) and Windows (1.3.0)) and last update version (1.3.5). Support for D3 and D300 so it should include the D90. The updates also handle other issues.

You could also download Nikon View NX 2 for free.

I already have Capture NX 1.3.5 installed, and it opens D3 nefs just fine, but it says "Cannot load file ...." whenever I try to open a D90 nef.

Anyone know why?

The only thing that comes to mind is that the D90 NEF has been corrupted.

Have you tried Nikon View NX (2)?

Do you know someone who could try to use Nikon Capture NX 2 to try to open one of your D90 NEFs?

Do you have an old copy of Nikon Capture?

Have you tired a newly shot D90 NEF?

George,

These are D90 nefs shot the past couple of nights by my assistant of a military ball and a wedding.

They all open properly in View NX2, LightRoom 3, and Photoshop CS5.

They just won't open in (his) Capture NX.

Strange. I have never seen something like that with Capture NX2. If there is a way to make the NEF file available, I'd be happy to try it with my installation of Capture NX2. This could isolate the problem. Peter

I am sure that Capture NX2 will open the D90 nefs. ViewNX and ViewNX2 also will open the D90 nefs.

Maybe my particular copy of Capture NX has become corrupt.

Does anyone have Capture NX who could try a D90 nef? I can send you a D90 nef to try.

Russ,

Page 62 of the D90 manual says to use Nikon Capture NX 2. So it looks like Nikon Capture NX will not work. And the Capture NX manual does not list the D90 as a compatible camera.

This is what I thought in the first place. I was just looking for confirmation.

The D90 was released after the D300 & D3, I think NX2 was released about the same time as the D90, so you probably need NX2 to open the files.

That is correct.

Russ - you might want to use View NX2 if you are not ready to upgrade Capture. View NX2 has many of the same functions but edits are only applied globally (rather than selectively). The editing capability of View is also a bit coarse with some adjustments - such as D lighting or Sharpening, but in other respects is probably better than the older versions of Capture NX.

Thanks Eric,

I thought that was the case, but I was just trying to confirm it.

I was investigating this for my assistant's D90. I used Capture NX in the past, but no longer need it, and I was going to give it to him. I now use Adobe LightRoom and Photoshop CS5.

I wonder why Nikon never supplied any patch to make Capture NX work with newer cameras?

Capture NX2 was released about 6-9 months before the D300/D3 (I bought it well before my D300). The initial deliveries of the D300 included a free copy of Capture NX2. Others before and after needed to pay to upgrade from NX to NX2. Capture NX was updated for the D300/D3 at that time.

The latest update of Capture NX2 requires the original product code from Capture NX for activation if you have upgraded rather than buying new. So the old version does have value in providing an upgrade price if your assistant wants NX2.

The D90 was released about 8 months later - around a year or so after the release of Capture NX2.
