"nx2 & view nx not able to render jpg"

Brattleboro, US

i received a set of 5 jpgs recently. viewnx 2.1.2 is able to render a thumbnail of all of the images but cannot otherwise process 2 of them - the remaining 3 are fine. as well, cnx2.2.7 cannot preview or render either of those 2 images. the error message from both viewnx and cnx2 is 'unknown file format'. cs5, bridge and photomechanic have no problem with any of the images. if i save the images in cs5 as a new jpg or as a tiff, the nikon products still cannot work with them. i cannot identify anything in these images that marks them as different. any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Most likely a corrupted EXIF header. You can try this program. It is free so make sure there isn't anything funny but it looks legit.

thanks Jim - i've been trying to make photorec work without much success so far - after your post i remembered that there is a file recovery program that came with my sandisks, but i have long since formatted over them and had never loaded them onto this computer (it was on an older computer).

Are you saying that you can see a thumbnail but cannont double click and expand the image to a full screen?

Or are you saying you have a JPEG but cannot edit the image? Exactly what can you not process and edit?

Are you sure the files are JPEG's? If they are some other format and renamed a JPEG, the files may appear to be JPEG but are not really. But that does not sound right since you can view a thumbnail.

I can't adjust WB or Exposure to a JPEG, but can adjust other items.

Eric -

viewnx: i can see a thumbnail, but cannot expand it to a full screen - error message: unknown file format

nx2: i cannot see the thumbnail and cannot expand to edit. same error
photomechanic, cs5, no problems - i can see thumbnail and expand for viewing or editing

looking at file properties, they have all of the attributes of jpegs and were all created cs5 by someone else directly to disk and, as far as i know, without format type name alteration.

Make sure the files are not layered. CNX2 cannot process a file if it is not flattened.

thanks Bob, that was a great thought...unfortunately,when i double checked, i was disappointed to find that your simple solution was not the answer: they were definitely flattened.

the problem turns out to have been the ICC profile - it was 'US Web Coated (SWOP) v2" - i converted in cs5 to adobe srgb and i can now edit in nx2.
thanks for all of the input and help.
