"Reminded of why I gave up on Nikon software"

CA

I thought I'd give Nikon Transfer another go this evening.... I opened it and was thoughtfully told a new version was available.

So, I did the download (it was packaged in 'Vise' form which I haven't seen for a long time!).

I did all the clicks, put in the password.... everything seemed to be going fine.

Then a message pops up.... I have another version installed! Wow, REALLY???

I have to uninstall this version and then go back and re-install the new version!!

Get a grip, Nikon. This is 2010, not 1990. Every single piece of software I upgrade these days simply says that there is an older version installed, do I want to replace it.... if that.

Honestly, it's like going back 20 years.....

And that's why I didn't buy N2X or any of their other clunky, outdated and frustrating efforts. I don't really care if it renders raw files better than Aperture.... I have to use it, work with it, live with it! And I can't live with this rubbish....

Rant over.

Visit my Nikonians gallery. Actually, don't bother, there's nothing there!

Are you running on a MAC because my Nikon updates don;t act that way, I run win 7 pro 64 bit and Vista 32 bit. They find the old SW ask if you want to update and then does the update.

Same comment as Bob here. XP user and I have downloaded some 18 or 20 software updates and always it asks a simple question - older version exists, overwrite? (Or something similar).

Wow, tell us how you _really_ feel. Nikon Transfer doesn't require a password.
You may be referring to the operating system requiring an admin password to
authorize system changes. Transfer also does not require that you un-install
previous versions, it notifies you that an older version is there and asks if
you want to replace the old version. Just like other "2010" software.

.....at least that's the way it has _always_ worked here, for the past eighteen
months, on both Windows XP boxes and my Macs.

I second that.
I run CNX, VNX and TNX on Win7 now, but before I ran them on XP, Vista.
TNX never required a password but asked a simple question if to overwrite the old version or not. That was all it asked for the past couple of years.

The password entry is normal as that's how I've set the Mac up (stops my kids deleting stuff by accident!)

Here's a screenshot..... I am running Mac Os 10.6.2.

Thanks... I only just noticed the word "region".... I have only ever seen that on DVD's. I have never heard of regionalised software!

Still, the original software came with the camera, bought new at a Nikon dealer in Canada.

It has the Canadian guarantee and everything, and is registered with Nikon.

I am still in Canada, and was running the old programme, which told me there was a new version.

Now, anybody with half a brain would expect that to be in the same region (although why on earth they care about regions for software is beyond me!).

So it's the Canadian programme directing me to download software from a different region.

Nice, Nikon, really nice.

Stick to making cameras.... you're good at that. As for software, then either farm it out to someone who knows what they're doing, or just drop it altogether.

Did someone say that people were being a little too hard on the OP??

NewFad,

Thank you, but no, I don't want Nikon to stop producing software. By the way, Nikon farms out Capture NX 2. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same for all of their software.

I would try to download the program version you have installed from the North American site. Then load it and try the updates. It does makes thing right, but it might fix your issue.

I think some are being a little hard on the OP. I have installed trial versions of 3 pieces of Nikon software (including NX2, Camera Pro2 and Nikon View). Every time I run any of them, I get a dialog box telling me there is an updated version. When I try to download through that window, it appears to be downloading until almost finished, then quits and tells me unable to download.

In fact, they are all up to date. Nikon was unable to help me, telling me after a phone call and two day wait to uninstall and reinstall. I did so, and same problem.

So, every time I start a Nikon program, I get the annoying little box and click "Later" and that's how it will be going forward, I guess.

I don't have these problems with any other software.

Glad you all are on this subject... I have USA Nikon transfer/Viewx version that came with my D-90 and have been using Capture NX2 that I downloaded on trail. I think I have about 2-3 weeks left. For now I am satisfied for the most part and since I am getting use to it I think I will purchase Nikon capture NX2 when my trail expires. But, I can't find anywhere what it will cost me. So if I cant discover the cost, I will be forced to cancell it the day before it expires and buy it elsewhere. Has anybody had this same experience and know what the cost will be? I amusing it on Windows XP.
Thanks

Shop around, the Mac version is cheaper at Amazon than directly from Nikon...And I would be surprised if that were not the case with the Windows version.
