"The Blood's Not There"
Fri 12-Jul-13 01:31 AM by ColColt

Knoxville, US

I was trying to take a photo of myself to show some shooting friends what a 45-90 Sharps buffalo rifle did to my shoulder and after uploading to NX2 I noticed what appeared to be blood on the side of my face and neck. Being a little bit panicky since I'm on three blood thinners, I ran into the bathroom and saw nothing? What could have happened with the Compact Flash card to have caused this. It's a SanDisk Ultra II at 2GB.

Hmm could it be some kind of strange shadow? It does seem to follow the contour of your neck.

Concur with Jim -looks like a shadow. Check around the room -it looks like something long and hanging down...

I took that photo with bounced flash from the SB-600. I don't know what could have been hanging down...cobwebs somewhere?

David,
From my point of view, to shoot a buffalo rifle you first need to be a buffalo yourself.
Typical muzzle energy of the 45-90 is very high for a rifle with a stock that usually lacks a custom pad. The recoil is murderous.
I don't even shoot my Enfield 303 Brit for that same reason.
I may shoot a 50 cal rifle from time to time but it has a heavy duty recoil absorption piston.

Never mind the card, or the flash, or the bounce shadows.
Get to your physician ASAP. Hopefully he is also a shooter so he won't yell at you

Have a great time

I had trouble renewing my Silver membership for a bit over a month and didn't see this until now. I no longer have that 45-90. I sent it back to Shiloh Sharps to be rebarreled to 40-70 Sharps Straight. It won't beat me so badly like the 45-90. The main problem was the butt of the rifle. It's crescent shaped and thin with the plate being steel...not conducive to pampering your shoulder. The rifle is due back tomorrow and I already have a "Limb Saver" rubber pad for the stock.

I did have to go to the doc but was told to just keep a heating pad on it. I'm on Plavix and Warfarin so, the bruises were worse than normal. It's back to normal now but took about a month.

This is a pic of the 45-90 on the right. The first one is a 357 Magnum, second is a 45 ACP beside "Big Bertha".

This is what the stock looks like. You can see the crescent shape and imagine how that feels against the shoulder.

Zooming in on the picture, it looks like the ends of the red line, at least the bottom end, are lifted off the skin. Remnant of the shirt or sweater you were wearing? that dropped off on your way to the bathroom?

All is well. I got the rifle back from Shiloh Sharps with the new barrel/caliber and it's not near as bad as the 45-90. I still have that barrel but, it's not going back on the rifle anytime soon!
