A check of the Nikon web site shows the D800 only supports the ML-3. The D4 is the only camera model that I see were one can use both the ML-3 and ML-L3.
So you have to use an IR release that has a 2 stage release, no IR sensor time out, a 360 degree rotatible sensor, 2 communication channels, and an interrupt trigger. Yes, a little hard to attach, but more operating features.
I have a D70 and ML-L3 I am willing to trade even up.
