My new 500VR seems to be front-focussing very slightly.
I sppent the day birding in the garden with roving flocks of wild finches. Typically shooting 1/1000 sec and f8 at quite close distances of 12 to 15 feet. Although the images are generally sharp, on most of the pics, even when I focus for the head, I am getting better sharpness in front of the selected focus area than behind it.
When setting an AF correction in the D800 menu a little diagram comes up. At one end is the camera, then a focal plane in the middle. a scale of 0 to -20 in front of the focal plane and 0 to 20 behind the plane represents the range of corrections.
If my lens is indeed front focussing, should my correction setting be positive (behind the focal plane) or negative (in front of the plane).
I have read and re-read the manual - it is not clear on this issue.
