My Pentax friends claim that one of the major Pentax cameras had this problem too, which they then had to recall and fix.
My D300 focuses perfectly, in ANY color light.
Maybe the change Nikon made to the AF system to allow it to focus at f/8 screwed up the performance under Tungsten light. If so, that is a design flaw IMO.
