I bought an SB400 and found it did not add much to the built in flash. It bounced, but only in one direction. I wanted off camera flash so I sold it and bought two non Nikon all manual flashes (total same price as SB400) that I'm very happy with. Probably would have stayed with Nikon and bought an SB600 if I wanted to use TTL. Most users and especially beginners would want TTL I believe.
