Hi Ken,

Welcome to Nikonians!

>I am new poster, just beginning to take pictures with a D5100
>1st tried night shots during Geminid meteor shower, no meteors
>and had a hard time w/ focus

The AF system need light and an AF target with contrast.
The nightime sky has neither.
Seting the focus to Manual should solve your focus problem.

>Next used it for a 100th birthday party indoors at a
>resteraunt
>I used the 18-70 kit lens and the pop up flash, everything on
>auto. I was not pleased with the color, lighting or focus

The color and lighting sound like a White Balance issue.
The focus issue could be caused by using a AF Target without a lot of contrast.

Was the subject you were focusing on in focus?

If so, it could be the result narrow DOF if you were shooting with the aperture wide open.

>Then back at the house I tried using the video mode on auto
>and found later that everyone had skin tones that make the
>look like smurfs (blue)

Again, it sound like the White Balance is set to something other than Auto.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
