Hi Matthew,

The D5100 is fully compatible with both the SB-400 and SB-600 supporting all functions when in the D5100's hotshoe or attached by SC-: 17, 28, or 29 TTL extension cord.
Since the D5100 doesn't have Commander mode in the built in Speedlight an SB 00, 800, 900, 910, or SU-800 would have to be in the hotshoe to use CLS wireless flash control.
