"moving from a p90 to a d5000 - "macro" pictures question"

US

Hi everyone.

I had a p90 for a few months and LOVED it, especially how I could get within a few inches of a subject to take really cool close up images.

my p90 was stolen and I upgraded to a d5000 with a standard issue lens. I'm noticing even in close up mode, I can't get very close in to take really detailed close up shots any more.

I'm sure it is a flaw in my understanding. But, can anyone explain it?

Can my d5000 as it sits, compete with the p90 on those close up shots? Do I have to purchase an expensive macro lens to get the same thing I was getting with my p90?

Any enlightenment here would be MOST appreicated!
