You're right Brian, so I've been looking with wider horizons. I have found two options so far.
Option 1: $849 + 12% tax = $950 New D90 with a 18-55mm lens, new from a retailer so full warranties will apply.
Option 2: $720, no tax, and add a used or new 18-55 VR lens ($150 ish) = $870
The add reads as follows: "Almost Mint Nikon D90 Body, Original Papers and Warranty, with MB-D80 generic Grip, 2 batteries 1 generic, 8GB and 4GB memory cards, Never Used ML-L3 Wireless shutter release, a Never Used Cable Release switch and all the cords, LCD Screen cover, Flash Shoe cover, some parts are still sealed in their packages!! 25,000 shutter count"
Is a battery grip something I will probably be wanting in the future? I can definitely see the point in a remote shutter release, but I'm unsure about the battery grip.
