Jeff you can learn a lot about F stops and shutter speeds by looking at your own eye. For example when we look at the sun or a bright light source we normally wink a lot more, and reduce the size of our eyes so that we limit the amount of light coming into our eyes. Similarly in a dark area we do exacly the oppositeo get more light in our eyes. In a camrea Fstops are the sizes of apertures or the opening in the lens to let the light come and fall on the mirror first and then the sensor. Shutter speeds are like the winking out our eyes. Fast shutter speeds mean less light falling on the sensor for an exposure. larger Fstops i.e for example F22 mean a very small hole , and F1.8 mean a very large hole. Higher Fstops also gives larger DOF or Depth of filed.
