Often it's time lapse photography... it's super easy to get into the thousands very quickly. I've shot a couple of time lapse sequences, it's easy to take 3,000 photographs in a very short period of time... like in a couple of hours. Imagine what it takes when shooting all day or for a 24 hour period.
Very easy to rack up 50K exposures and have the camera look like it just came out of the box.
