Karen -- Repeat after me: "There are no dumb questions." Again: "There are no dumb questions." If you are wondering about something, there are others who were reluctant to ask because they thought the question was dumb too! Photographically speaking, we are all at different points in our lives. Even within our own skill set there are things we are masters of and others that baffle us. Nikonians is a wonderful place to raise these questions, because they will invariably be answered concisely, correctly and with kindness and courtesy -- and usually quickly!
BTW, you might look at the Camera Raw capability of Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4. The gradient filter function in both often covers the problem of widely disparate exposures in the same image, either by allowing you to darken the sky or lighten the foreground. The gradint filter is also a handy quick burning tool.
