Actually, using the CH setting will indeed let the camera fire the 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 shots (maybe I add or forget some here ), if you keep the button depressed.
And the fact that a tripod is needed is also due to the weight of the mirror, which goes up and down at each image. We're speaking of a "huge" sensor, with a real obturator, not of the thumbnail-sized sensor of a smartphone!
Also, I do prefer the HDR done afterwards, because you can also intervene in the process!
