Bob -

I had a similar problem with my 70-200 and D700. It turned out to be the electrical connection between the lens and the body. Try cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol. In my case that didn't help, buy since it only happened with my 70-200 I ended up sending the lens in and Nikon refurbished it and all is well again.
