I would wait it out, unless a fantastic deal for a D700 is dropped into the WTS Forum. I am skipping the D800 for now mainly because I am very satisfied with the results of my D700 and I really don't want to deal with the additional costs outside just the body of the D800. At 75MB/NEF file I will tear through my 1TB FW Drive quick, I will need new Memory cards since I would only be able to hold approx 100 pics per 8GB card, etc, sop the $1000 difference starts getting much wider in my eyes for something unproven. But that's me.

If the D800 becomes equal to the D700 when reduced to 12MP in post, and the additional costs don't bother you, then you will be happy that you waited since you won't be trying to offload your D700 along with everyone else.
