That all depends on whether you shoot wide angles or low light. If the answer to both is no, then the D700 is merely a D300 with lower shadow noise and less reach on the telephoto.
Most of my lenses are already FX lenses but shooting them on a DX sensor means using the best parts of the MTF curve. On a full frame sensor and with no increase in number of pixels, results on a D700 would be worse than D300 in terms of edge and corner sharpness.
Which, as you say might result in upgrading to better lenses.
