The smaller the size of a catalog, the quicker the performance of the application. Lightroom bogs down once you get up to the mid-30,000 range from what I've heard. That's a pretty solid reason and really prolific photographers might create a catalog for each year (I don't). Another reason might be shooting for a specific client. You might want to segregate all your images for a client into a single catalog just to aid with organization. Some segregate their professional work from their personal stuff.

The downside of using separate catalogs is that only one can be active at a time, and you can't seach across all of them - only the active one.

I currently have about 14,000 images cataloged in Lightroom 2.1, performance is fine, and I feel no need to go with separate catalogs. The advantages of a single catalog outweigh the disadvantages (which haven't manifested themselves in my situation).

Now, when I'm shooting in the field, I'll set up a new catalog on an external hard drive that attaches to my laptop. When I finish the shoot and get home, I'll merge that catalog into my primary one. That way, I get all the edits, ratings, virtual copies, labels, previews and actual images that were in the catalog and don't have to regenerate those again.
