Tom I think that taking close to 200 shots of a sunset makes sense. The light changes quickly as the sun dips below the horizon. You also mentioned that you walked around a lot in order to get different perspectives. I also suspect that you bracketed many of your shots. It sounds like to me that you carefully planned your photoshoot.
What you did was a long shot (pardon the pun) from those who fire off hundreds of frames, standing in one spot, in the hope that one or two of them come out looking good.
