The remote SB800s were in SU-4 mode because some of them were beside/behind the camera, where the IR CLS pulses could not reliably reach. I did not want to use an on-camera SB800 to trigger the remotes, and the SU800 cannot be tilted up and fitted with a diffuser. In the shot with the train in the image (bottom), some of the remote SB800s were behind the patrol car illuminating the side of the train where IR CLS could not reach. Ergo, the need for the RF Pocket Wizards.

I am almost completely out of the IR CLS mode these days, and have thirteen Pocket Wizards: six Plus II and seven MultiMax units. Yes, this means I must set the power levels on them manually, which is not a problem. If I were doing it again, I would have acquired thirteen of the MultiMax units, as they are much more sophisticated and capable of more complex image capture timings.
