Hi Scott,

The best book on writing, and its mechanics (puncuation, syntax (word order), grammar, usage) and the rest is a beloved classic that has been around for more than a century: 'The Elements of Style' by Strunk and White.

It is so good it never goes out of print, but it is overpriced (it's only a hundred pages) so I'm a big hit with students when I tell them how to get it free on-line where they can download it and print it out if they want.

Go to www.bartleby.com and you can find 'The Elements of Style' there, along with hundreds of great books for free (even the complete works of Shakespeare).
