The Nikon DSLR cameras use a format very close to the original 35mm aspect ratio which fits very well with the 4x6 print size. If you resize an image from, say, a D700 to fit a 4x6 format you get 3.983" x 6". You can crop the original image to exactly 4x6 and not lose any significant image information.
