This makes an awful lot of sense, and shows just how incomplete my analogy was: what about that whole class of people who enjoy the process of learning something new and broadening the possibilities of what they can do? That's the group you obviously fit into.
Strange thing is that my musical exploits used to put me fair and square into this group, too: I've been playing synthesizers for years - and regularly going after new models with ever more sophisticated synthesis techniques - because I really enjoy the ability to create my own sounds.
But my newest keybord was a total change of direction: a harpsichord. It's incredibly difficult to play because you need a very precise 'touch' which I'm still stuggling to develop, but it's very, very satisfying. And it goes without saying that it's beautifully 'baroque' sound is something no synthesizer could ever match.
Wonder how long it'll be before I return from digital to film?
