I have a Manfrotto 035RL Super Clamp with Standard Stud and a Manfrotto 2909 Super Clamp with 2907 Reversible Short Stud. Darn good.
However I also bought clamps at Home Depot, drilled a hole for a 1/4"crew and placed on it a dead or not-hot hotshoe. My best ones are those made by Stroboframe (the maker of flash brackets). "Best" because they are cheap and can hold any speedlight in any position. With them, I found no need for a mini ball head.
(I just have to remember to use some cloth inside the clamps to avoid marring furniture)
