Since you can recharge them at least hundreds of times, you will also end up putting about two orders of magnitude less toxic chemicals into the waste disposal system. I'm keen for convenience like anyone else, but really in this case if I have one extra set of low-discharge batteries, the convenience difference is pretty much nil. I use them until they drop, put another set in, and that night I put them in the charger. Two hours later they go into the spare battery case. It's hard to see how to make this more convenient.
I don't even bring a charger on trips unless I know I'm going to go nuts with the flash units. So far that's been twice, only one of which did I shoot enough flash to warrant the charger.
