Have you checked which way the KR wind is blowing smoke?

Experience will indicate this. You can always check your histogram and lost highlights.

Flash exposure is computed independently from the ambient light exposure. So if your flash is the majority of illumination (more than 2 f stops of illumination), ambient illumination does not come into play.
