"Speedlight help"

GB

I'm a bit confused as to speedlights...
I have a recently purchased D50 and would like a better flash, do I really need the 800 or would a 600 do me, its only for occasional use and being a bit new to photography why do they call it a speedlight? not sure of the term used but would the refresh be faster or is it the same sort of waiting period for the flash to recharge?

I take photo's mainly using the set modes on the D50 so is there much setting up to do with speedlights or does it do it automatically for you?
I'm experimenting with shutter speeds (brave eh) so I am slowly learning....

Regards Steve (D50)
