Actually I believe that at 1:1 reproduction ratios the DOF becomes focal length independent. Even at near macro range the differential is so minute that it can be considered inconsequential.

Another technique not mentioned is to use the focus plane to an advantage such as in this shot.

Even though it was taken at only f/8, it workers for me because the Hoverfly's back is fairly parallel to the sensor.
