Pete, EXCELLENT detailed information !!
I doubt anyone could state it better.

As I think about it now, it makes perfect sense to me that the "automatic" modes really should be fully controlled by the camera. And for us that wish to "alter" the settings in any way need to gain more skill in using the PASM modes, etc.
