Why would you want to delete the NEF?

Most keep it so if they need to adjust the image for a different resolution, crop, or make other adjustments to tone, sharpening, white balance, etc, the NEF is a better starting point as all previous edits can be removed and you can start fresh, at least with Nikon Capture NX2.
