Each new camera model adds a unique value to the camera MODEL tag and most programs that process RAW files like the NEF format check this value to see if the program is aware of this model. The model name maybe the only item that changed from a different model, like the D70 and D70s, but there is no guarantee, so software vendors set the programs to not accept camera models that the program is not aware of. Nikon does this through updates to Nikon View NX#, Nikon Capture NX#, and Camera Control Pro#. Adobe issued ACR plug-in updates to provide the necessary data for processing RAW files.
It is always a good idea to keep your software and firmware updated on a regular basis. You might not want the first person to upgrade, but after a month or two from the release of an update there should be enough users that have upgraded for you to see if there are any major problems with the software or firmware.
